SANIBEL, Florida – September 17, 2014 – Supporting affordable housing through business partnerships was the theme of a presentation by Kelly Collini, executive director of Community Housing and Resources, Inc. (CHR), at the September 16 Sanibel Captiva Chamber of Commerce monthly luncheon. The luncheon was sponsored by Bailey’s General Store and hosted by the Sundial Beach Resort and Spa.

“We couldn’t do what we do without you,” said Collini, speaking to the sold-out group of nearly 100 attendees. “As business representatives in the community, you know how important affordable housing is to the island. CHR relies on partnerships with island businesses to support our program and to tell people that there are affordable housing options on Sanibel for full-time Sanibel workers.”

Collini went on to explain how CHR residents must work on Sanibel full-time and that their rent is based on their income. “Rent is thirty percent of gross income,” she said. “To qualify, you must maintain full-time employment on Sanibel. We follow HUD for income level limits, and all this information is available on our website at SanibelCHR.org.”

Volunteerism by CHR’s residents, Collini noted, is highly encouraged, and many of the residents do volunteer by performing tasks around CHR’s properties and by helping with special events. CHR also encourages residents to volunteer in the greater Sanibel community, and many residents are active in that way as well.

“I’m proud of how our residents have stepped up and really taken ownership of their homes,” Collini added. “What we do is a hand up, not a hand out, and our residents are very thankful for it. In turn, we’re thankful to our island businesses for your ongoing support.”
